Karl B. Kühne

Karl B. Kühne (born July 7, 1920 in Brandenburg ; † April 30, 2018 in Cuxhaven ) was a German captain , pilot and author of the shipping and local history of Cuxhaven.

Life

At the age of 15, Karl left. B Kühne at sea and began his nautical training as a sailor . From 1935 he first sailed as a cabin boy on a motorized three-masted schooner in the North and Baltic Seas, then on steamers in overseas shipping to North and South America, the East Indies and the Persian Gulf until the beginning of the Second World War . In 1940 he obtained the helmsman's license and was employed as an officer on supply ships to Norway and France . After being a prisoner of war, he passed the examination to become a captain on a long voyage and worked as a sea pilot on the Elbe and North Sea from 1952 until his retirement in 1983.

As a pilot he was involved in the merger of the pilot brotherhoods Hamburg and Cuxhaven in 1958 and was assessor for ten years in the Hamburg Maritime Office and the Federal Higher Sea Office .

Act

In addition to his professional activity, Karl B. Kühne researched and wrote articles and books on the history of piloting and the development of the port of Cuxhaven: in the early 1970s, he began to collect evidence on the history of piloting and wrote several books on marine history on this subject as well as authoritative local history publications on the development of the Cuxhaven port from the early 17th century via the fishing and naval port to today's “universal port”.

In addition, he did volunteer work in numerous associations and initiatives. The Nautical Association, which he co-founded and was chairman of from 1975 to 1983, and the “Association for Ritzebüttel Castle eV” should be emphasized. He also ensured that the wooden gaff schooner Hermine was given a place as a memorial at the Cuxhaven lock priel. He also encouraged and supported the founding of the Fishing Museum Wind Speed ​​10 - Wreck- und Fischereimuseum Cuxhaven .
