Arnold Kludas (Kirk R. Williams, 2009)

Arnold Kludas (born October 18, 1929 in Hamburg-Rothenburgsort ) is a German shipping historian and librarian.

Life

Kludas' father was a teacher at the Wendenstrasse elementary school in Hamburg-Hammerbrook . The mother came from Alt Jabel in Mecklenburg .

Kludas started school in Hamburg in 1936. When he switched to the Hindenburg-Oberrealschule am Brekelbaumspark in Hamburg-Borgfelde in 1940 (without an entrance examination) , his father was drafted into the Wehrmacht . During the Second World War he came to Eichgraben (Zittau) in 1941 with the Kinderlandverschickung . Two years later, his family survived Operation Gomorrah because they were with their grandmother in Alt-Jabel. All of the neighbors in Hamburg perished. It was only in 1947 that it became certain that the father, who had been missing since July 1944, had died in Normandy. Kludas continued his school attendance in 1943 at the boarding school in Mecklenburgische Landesschule in Neukloster , Güstrow and Crivitz . After the end of the war the school was closed. In 1946 the mother and the children moved to Bad Doberan , where Kludas began an apprenticeship as a carpenter in 1947 . Due to differences with the teacher, he broke it off in 1948. This was followed by activities in brickworks and in the Saxon uranium mining at SAG Wismut . In a conflict with the political situation, he was lucky enough to escape arrest in December 1951. The flight to West Berlin was followed by employment in agriculture, including as a tractor and truck driver in Barntrup in Lippe .

Blohm + Voss

Blohm + Voss , Kludas' sponsors

In 1955 he returned to Hamburg. At Blohm + Voss he was first a crane operator, then an office manager in the iron warehouse and a work planner in shipbuilding. The management became aware of Kludas' broad knowledge - especially in the areas of Hamburg, shipping and shipbuilding. From the mid-1960s onwards, she increasingly consulted him on questions of shipping history and entrusted him with shipyard tours of more demanding groups and personalities. In his main activity, Kludas switched to the position of material dispatcher and a clerk in standardization . By decision of the board of directors, he was appointed head of the specialist library in 1972 .

Stalling

Also on behalf of the shipyard's board of directors, Kludas came into contact with the German Maritime Museum that was being built in Bremerhaven in 1971 . In discussions with the Board of Trustees, he should assess the institute's eligibility for funding; but there was still no way of knowing that he would switch to the Weser professionally. In 1973 he went to the Gerhard Stalling publishing house in Oldenburg (Oldenburg) . As a publisher's editor and editor he headed the Stalling maritime program division for three years . It was difficult for him to resign from Blohm + Voss; but now he could deal full-time with the history of seafaring .

German Maritime Museum

When the German Maritime Museum was opened by Federal President Walter Scheel on September 5, 1975 , the reading room and the magazines of the library and archive were still unorganized intermediate storage for everything that did not come into the exhibition immediately. To change this was the task of Kludas, who took up his post as head of the DSM library on April 1, 1976. Ship models, paintings and ship bells were brought to the designated depots, books and archival materials were separated from one another, properly set up or filed, and a systematic and alphabetical catalog was developed that enables quick access to literature and sources on a wide variety of topics. Despite the ongoing understaffing, interns and volunteers were able to inventory the books and archive materials in the 1970s. After a good 16 years at the DSM, Kludas retired on October 31, 1992. Widowed since 2011, he lives in Grünendeich . The sister Hilde (* 1931) and the brother Rainer (* 1935) are still alive.

photographer

Always a passionate photographer, Kludas donated his black and white negatives, which number in the thousands, and valuable parts of his collection to the German Maritime Museum. These include glass plate negatives with photos of the Port of Hamburg and the Port of Rotterdam , which were taken in the 1920s and 1930s. Walter Lüden had given Kludas many original prints on baryta paper that he had made in the port and on the Elbe in the 1950s and 1960s.

meaning

Since the early 1970s, Kludas has written more than 50 books on topics from German and international shipping history. Many of them are considered standard works. His reputation as an outstanding chronicler of international passenger shipping worldwide was founded on the five-volume documentary The Great Passenger Ships of the World , which was published between 1972 and 1974 and was also translated into English from 1975 under the title Great Passenger Ships of the World . In five volumes (1986–1990), Kludas dealt with the history of German passenger shipping from 1850 to 1990. The two volumes pleasure voyages at sea - a history of German cruises inspired the television documentary Luxus auf dem Meer - die Geschichte der Kreuzfahrt (2011) by Reinhard Joksch and Annette Sander, in which Arnold Kludas played a prominent role. In addition, the shipping historian was also involved in several books about the Port of Hamburg . His review of the ships and the company history of the ferry operator operating there, the Hafen-Dampfschiffahrt-Actien-Gesellschaft (HADAG) founded in 1888, also belongs in this context .

In addition to the books listed, there are more than 100 articles in German and foreign-language yearbooks, compilations, encyclopedias, journals, newspapers, magazines and other print media. Radio, television and other institutions value Kludas as an interview partner, speaker and expert. One example is the more than 50 years of collaboration with the Hamburg Harbor Concert , in which he participated as a shipping expert at the captain's table. Another is the express report requested in 1987 by the Museum of Labor at the German Maritime Museum. By briefly and specifically conveying the unique selling points of the Cap San Diego to Hamburg, he ensured the purchase of the ship in literally the last hour.

  • The great passenger ships in the world.
This and the five following volumes are continuations of the volumes I – V of the same name listed above. They were published by Koehler in Herford after the bankruptcy of the Stalling Verlag, and from 1997 in Hamburg. The 2002 and 2006 editions appeared in an enlarged format and had two co-authors. Afterwards, Kludas transferred the standard work to the two co-authors for reasons of age. The 13 volumes of this work, which have been published since 1972, offer the world's only comprehensive overview of all passenger, ferry and cruise ships built since 1858 in the world from 10,000 GRT / GT, with technical and biographical data as well as photos of all ships.
