Life

After attending the Hindenburg secondary school, Walter Lüden first began a commercial apprenticeship. However, he did not practice the profession later, but worked after an interlude with the police at the Reichsflugsicherung on the ground radio station Hamburg-Fuhlsbüttel. During the Second World War Lüden served in the Wehrmacht.

In the late 1920s, Lüden began taking photos, initially with a simple box camera, later with a Rolleicord, and finally, when he had made photography his job, with a Leica III b and Hasselblad .

He developed and enlarged his own pictures himself in order to get every desired effect and the highest quality.

Over the years Lüden worked for various newspapers and magazines, for example for the Hamburger Abendblatt .

But he also worked for other clients such as the Blohm & Voss and Stülcken shipyards , the Hamburger Hochbahn or the VW factory, with recordings for brochures and other advertising material. Various commissions took him on board the ships Wappen von Hamburg and Cap San Antonio . During the voyages, he documented the various activities of the crew for an exhibition on recruiting.

Lüden became particularly famous for his initially private photographic work in the port of Hamburg. In an appraisal by the Hamburger Abendblatt on April 10, 1964, he was considered “Hamburg's port photographer No. 1”.

A short time later, Lüden took up his last residence on the island of Föhr , from then on worked on various art books and was committed to researching the history of the island of Föhr.
