Hamburg harbor concert

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hamburg Harbor Concert is a radio broadcast by Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR) and the oldest existing broadcast in Germany. By the seventy-five year anniversary on June 13, 2004, 2500 episodes had been broadcast.

history

The first port concert was broadcast on June 9, 1929 on board the steamer Antonio Delfino , at that time still by Nordische Rundfunk AG (NORAG). The concept for a program with an emphatically maritime character was developed by Kurt Esmarch at the instigation of the then NORAG director Hans Bodenstedt . Esmarch directed the show until 1964. After that, Hermann Rockmann directed the port concert from 1964 until his retirement in 1982 .

Originally it was a pure music program that was broadcast live early on Sunday morning from locations closely related to seafaring, such as ships anchored in the port of Hamburg . However, the concept was soon expanded to include additional elements such as interviews , reports and narratives from seaman's thread .

The popularity of the port concert prompted broadcasters in the rest of the German Reich to join the broadcast in the following years . After the synchronization of German broadcasting and the dissolution of NORAG, the broadcast was taken over by the Reich broadcaster Hamburg and continued.

After the end of World War II , no port concert was broadcast until 1947 . Then the NWDR resumed the broadcast; In 1956 it was transferred to the newly created NDR . In 1947 the Bremen Harbor Concert was also created . Over the years, the musical range changed; Originally only orchestral and instrumental music was offered, but now, under the musical direction of Günter Fuhlisch , vocal interpreters such as Carl Bay , accompanied by the accordionist Rudolf Klaus, increasingly appeared .

The focus of the program on seafaring with a variety of maritime themes remained unchanged. The preferred broadcasting location is still the Port of Hamburg (often from the Schulauer Fährhaus and, more recently, the International Maritime Museum in the Speicherstadt ) and the Hamburg sailors' club Duckdalben . But also from other German port cities or from on board ships is broadcast. More recently it has been produced in other countries and even outside of Europe . In contrast to the earlier live broadcasts, however, most of the programs are now also recorded.

The Hamburg harbor concert is still broadcast on Sunday morning between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. A repeat of the program can be heard on Monday from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. The program traditionally begins with the ringing of the bells of the Hamburg Michel and the traditional Anchors Aweigh march .

In Hamburg the port concert can be heard on NDR 90.3 ( VHF 90.3 MHz and in the Hamburg cable network: 93.2), Cuxhaven / Deutsche Bucht 98.4. It can also be received via satellite throughout Europe . The program is even taken over by two broadcasters in Namibia and Australia .

On January 26, 2020, the 3400th episode of the port concert was broadcast.

"Greetings on board" broadcast

Another very traditional and popular program of the NDR in the field of seafaring is the program Greetings on Board , which has been broadcast on Christmas Eve since 1953 , in which families, friends or shipping companies send greetings to the seafarers of ships all over the world (and vice versa) who have Christmas are not in the home. In addition, the program was even broadcast on the Norddeich Radio coast station until 1998 . In order to enable safe transmission on all oceans, various channels are used to broadcast this program and, after the shutdown of our own shortwave transmitters in 2011, shortwave frequencies have been rented since 2012.
