history

Explanation of the place name
Old names of the place are 1449 Gronendike and 1559 Gronendike. Grünendeich is probably the new name for Bardesfleth. The newly settled remaining area was given the name Grünendeich, which was first mentioned in 1449 and presented as a separate parish around 1500. A first church near the Elbe was destroyed by storm surges in the 16th century. The place name means in Low German: "am grönen dīke" ("am green dike").
