history

Longobards

Longobard rulers

Lombards were resident in Apensen over 2000 years ago .
In 2017, scientists discovered a gold-plated Roman sword during the restoration of a bronze urn of a Lombard prince. The gold-plated sword handle has a snake motif. No comparable item has yet been found in a Longobard grave in northern Germany. The sword scabbard comes from Noricum , in today's Austria . During the Gallic War there was a center for sword making and iron industry . The sword probably dates from between 60 BC. Until the birth of Christ.

The dead must have belonged to the elite and may be the founder of a local dynasty. In 1927 a cremation grave with rich gifts was discovered while plowing. In a damaged, Roman bronze bucket with a woman's head attached , burial objects made of bronze (9 kg) and silver (280 g) that were melted by the pyre were found next to corpse burns and pieces of charcoal . These were mainly vessel parts and vessels.

  • two large bronze basins with handles decorated with sea horses,
  • two bronze ladle and sieve pairs,
  • two silver cups,
  • Drinking horn and box fittings as well as a chair spur and a richly decorated bronze knee fibula.

The fibula and the spur allow the grave to be dated to the 2nd century AD. The spur suggests a male burial. Due to the lack of other typical accessories for men, especially weapons, and because of the unusually rich other furnishings, the grave of Apensen is assigned to the so-called »princely graves of the Lübsow group« and thus a small, socially high class of the older Roman imperial times in free Germania. However, it differs from the majority of the »princely graves« in that it is cremated instead of in body burial. Culturally, the grave can be assigned to the Elbe-Germanic circle of forms, ethnically to the Lombards.

graveyard

In Apensen, more than 800 burials have been recorded in the central cemetery. The cemetery was used from the 1st century BC to the 2nd century AD. It was the main cemetery in the region. In the floor of the cemetery there are thrown trees from this time. There were probably a lot of large oak trees in the cemetery.

Place name

The place was named in 1231 Abbenhusen , 1236 Abbenhusen , 1704 Abensen and 1823 Apensen . The name is formed with the base word Low German -husen , later High German -hausen , and the weakly inflected short name Abbo as a defining word.

Local history

The village was first named in the 13th century. The fire brigade Apensen was founded in 1895 and the Volksbank in 1897. The church in Apensen was built in 1910 . When the municipality was reformed in 1972, the place became a member of the Apensen municipality.
