Hans-Jürgen Häßler

Hans-Jürgen Häßler (born August 18, 1939 in Leipzig ; † October 17, 2011 in Hanover ) was a German prehistorian and founder and chairman of the German Holocaust Museum Foundation .

Life

In 1948, Hans-Jürgen Häßler fled with his parents from Leipzig to western Germany. At first he lived with his parents and brothers in a refugee camp in Hamburg-Billbrook for six years . In 1960 Häßler refused military service and did community service in a hospital in the Lüneburg Heath . He then obtained the general university entrance qualification at the State Evening High School. In 1968 he began studying Central European Archeology, Education , Geology and Modern History at the University of Hamburg . In 1975 he received his doctorate . Then Häßler worked as an archaeologist in the prehistory department of the Lower Saxony State Museum in Hanover . His areas of specialization were the pre-Roman Iron Age of Central and Northern Europe and the ancient Saxon tribal history. He published several papers on it and was editor of the journal Studies on Saxony Research .

In 1983 Häßler initiated the Cultural Scientist Peace Initiative for Peace and Disarmament in East and West , later he founded the Institute for Cultural Peace and Conflict Research . In 1998, Häßler established the German Holocaust Museum Foundation , of which he was chairman until his death. In 2007 he was awarded the Medal of Merit of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany .

Häßler died in Hanover, leaving behind a wife and four children. He was buried in the New St. Nikolai Cemetery.
