The Coastal Research Center (FSK) is a department of the Lower Saxony State Office for Water Management, Coastal and Nature Conservation (NLWKN) within the scope of the Lower Saxony Ministry of the Environment . In its professional assessment, the Coastal Research Center is an independent institution. It is based on the North Sea island of Norderney and in the north .

tasks

The NLWKN describes the tasks of the research center: “Basic development and applied third-party funded research in the coastal area, expansion of the range of instruments through aptitude test and methodological development, operationalization of findings from basic research, work for state administration projects where scientific expertise and knowledge of planning law framework conditions are required for the preparation of reports are, advice and preparation of expert reports for regional planning, plan approval and consent authorities with regard to demanding engineering and scientific issues. "

The tasks are divided into the areas of hydromorphology , coastal engineering , water surveying and the storm surge warning service for the entire Lower Saxony tidal area .

The Coastal Research Center participated in the Lower Saxony project “Climate Impact Research in Lower Saxony” (KLIFF) and was in charge of the area “Changeable Coastal Climate - Evaluation of Adaptation Strategies in Coastal Protection” (A-KÜST project). The research center worked on the subprojects "Storm, water level and sea state development in the southern North Sea in the event of climate changes", "Regional storm surge and sea state development in the Ems estuary", "Loads on coastal protection structures in the event of climate changes and alternative strategies in island and coastal protection", "Changes in Hydro- and sediment dynamics in the East Frisian Wadden Sea "as well as" Salt water input into the Lower Weser and water balance of adjacent tidal waters ".

history

The Coastal Research Center was founded in 1937 as a preparatory work center for the Prussian hydraulic engineering administration and was based in the north. Coastal protection, land reclamation and wood as a building material in coastal protection were the first topics that were dealt with holistically and interdisciplinary by engineers and natural scientists. After the establishment of the Federal Republic of Germany, the research center became part of the Federal Waterway Administration and its area of responsibility was extended to the entire coastal area of Lower Saxony, which is influenced by the tides. From 1954 on, the research center was an institution of the state of Lower Saxony, belonged to the business area of the Lower Saxony Ministry of Agriculture, then the Lower Saxony Ministry of the Environment, founded in 1986, from 1993 as part of the Lower Saxony State Office for Ecology, since 2005 of the Lower Saxony State Office for Water Management, Coastal and Nature Conservation.

Seat

The research center is based on the East Frisian island of Norderney and in the north. The building of the research center on Norderney is located directly next to the island mill Norderney (An der Mühle 5, 26548 Norderney). In autumn 2019, the Lower Saxony Ministry of the Environment announced the relocation of the departments from Norderney to the mainland.
