He was also known by his nickname "la hormiguita" (the ant).

Career

Sabás Ponce played exclusively for his hometown club Club Deportivo Guadalajara throughout his career. Together with his former teammate José Villegas, Sabás Ponce is the Mexican footballer who has won the most titles: eight championships, two cup wins and one triumph in the CONCACAF Champions Cup. There are also seven successes in the Mexican Supercup, which is called "Campeón de campeones" there. A truly impressive record.

Ponce was the playmaker in central midfield, who also liked to join the attacking game. His handling of the ball was as awesome as his passing game. Although he played a decisive role in the success of the "Campeonísimo" as one of the central control points and was indispensable as a game designer for his home club, he did not succeed in developing his talent in the national team. He made his international debut on March 13, 1960 against Costa Rica (1: 1), but came only to seven international appearances and scored not a single goal, although he was always called up in the storm row.
