Career

Villegas received his football training at his hometown club Club Deportivo Imperio . In 1951 he moved to the second division club CF La Piedad , with whom he won the second division championship and made promotion to the top division .

From the next 1952/53 season, José Villegas was under contract as a left full-back at Chivas, where he soon became a regular and stayed until the end of his career.

"El Jamaicón" made his international debut on February 26, 1956 against Costa Rica and came to a total of 20 international appearances by 1962. He was nominated for the 1958 World Cup as well as for the 1962 World Cup and in both cases "only" played in the opening game of the Mexican national team, which played against hosts Sweden (0: 3) and defending champions Brazil (0: 2 ) got lost.

Before the 1962 World Cup, the national team made a trip to Europe , where Villegas was also present. A few anecdotes have come down to us from this World Cup preparation tour, which testify to his extraordinary homesickness. During an interview, Villegas let a reporter know how much he was homesick and how much he missed his mother's Birria .

On the same trip he left an official dinner to which the Mexican national team had been invited during their stay in Lisbon . He just got up and went outside. When he had not returned after a while, his trainer Ignacio Trelles went in search of him and found him visibly dejected in the garden of the hotel. The following dialogue is said to have taken place there. Trelles asked: “José, you don't want to eat anything? What are you doing out here? ”Villegas replied,“ What should I eat? I'd rather have my chalupas and a good soup, but not this filth here that isn't from Mexico. "
