Kenji Nagai ( Japanese 長 井 健 司 , Nagai Kenji ; born August 27, 1957 in Imabari , Ehime Prefecture , Japan ; † September 27, 2007 in Rangoon , Burma ) was a Japanese photojournalist who was shot dead during demonstrations in Burma in 2007.

Life

After returning to Japan, he worked as a freelancer and for the Tokyo-based agency APF News , which specializes in reports from crisis areas.

Nagai arrived in Burma two days before the junta's bloody crackdown on protesters and was shot dead near the Sule Pagoda in downtown Rangoon while trying to capture the riot with his camera.

The photos of the reporter lying on the floor went around the world in the media on the same day, and the photographer Andrees Latif later received the Pulitzer Prize for his photos . On September 28, the Japanese private broadcaster Fuji Television and The Times released footage showing that Nagai was " apparently knocked to the ground by a soldier and then downright executed ."
