The Ehime Prefecture ( Jap. 愛媛県 , Ehime-ken ) is the northwest of the four prefectures on the island of Shikoku . The seat of the prefecture administration is in Matsuyama .

The prefecture emerged from Iyo Province in 1871 . For the origin and meaning of the name Ehime (in German: "lovely princess") see Shikoku # Etymology .

Administrative division

Since 2005, the prefecture has been divided into eleven independent cities ( Shi ) and nine (district / small) cities ( Chō ), which are organized into seven districts ( Gun ). On January 16, 2005, the village of Sekizen-mura was incorporated into the city of Imabari. Since then there are no more villages ( mura ) in the prefecture. After the introduction of today's community forms, there were just under 300 communities in 1889, of which only one urban district and 14 districts, around 230 in 1953 before the Great Shōwa regional reform, and 70 in 2000 before the Great Heisei regional reform.

In the table below, the districts ( ) are shown in italics, below each (indented) the small towns ( ) within them. A dependency between rural district and small town can also be seen in the first three digits of the code (1st column). The independent cities are at the beginning of the table.
