The Toyama prefecture ( Jap. 富山県 , Toyama-ken ) is a prefecture of Japan . It is located in the Chūbu region on the island of Honshū . The seat of the prefecture administration is Toyama .

geography

Lakes, gorges and high mountains define the image of Toyama Prefecture. The main attractions are the Kurobe Gorge Tateyama District, part of the Chūbu Sangaku National Park , and the coast near Himi , part of the Noto Hantō Quasi National Park . The southwest corner of the prefecture is part of Hakusan National Park .

history

After the Taika reform in 645, the area became Etchu Province . On the upper reaches of the Shokawa River is one of those remote areas that the Taira are said to have settled after they were forced to flee in the 1185 naval battle of Dan-no-ura .

During the Edo period , the province came under the control of the Maeda clan . The current prefecture name is from 1871, the current boundaries were established in 1883.

Itai-Itai disease (chronic cadmium poisoning) also occurred here in the 1950s .

The governor of Toyama has been Takakazu Ishii since 2004 , who was re-elected for a fourth term in October 2016 . In Parliament, which remained Liberal Democratic Party in the elections in April 2019 in possession of a two-thirds majority.

The Liberal Democratic Party is strong in the predominantly rural prefecture: All directly elected representatives in the national parliament - three in the House of Representatives , one for each partial election in the Council House - are Liberal Democrats after the parliamentary elections in 2016 , 2017 and 2019 , namely:

  • in the House of Representatives
    • for constituency 1, which covers most of Toyama city, Hiroaki Tabata (LDP, 3rd term), previously a member of the prefectural parliament for a short time, before that in the Toyama City Council,
    • for constituency 2 in the south and east Mitsuhiro Miyakoshi (LDP, 8th term of office), former State Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture,
    • for constituency 3, which covers the west with Toyama's second largest city Takaoka, Keiichirō Tachibana (LDP, 4th term), previously mayor of Takaoka and
  • in the council house

Administrative division

When today's community forms were introduced in 1889, Toyama was divided into 271 communities, including the two independent cities of Toyama and Takaoka. Since April 2005, the prefectural seat has also been a "core city" .
The number of municipalities fell in almost 100 years from 270 (1920) through 213 (1950) and 53 (1955) to currently (since 2006) 15. Ten urban districts ( -shi ) and four district-related cities ( -machi ) and one village ( -mura ) shows the current structure.
