Kurobe ( Japanese 黒 部 市 , -shi ) is a city in Japan on the river of the same name in Toyama Prefecture on the island of Honshu .
geography
The city is located in the scenic surroundings of the Japanese Alps . Nearby is the mountain Ushiru Tateyama, 3015 meters high . On the river of the same name, Kurobe , after which the city is named, is the largest arch dam in Japan, built between 1956 and 1963 , with a height of 186 meters: the Kurobe Dam .
history
Kurobe was created on April 1, 1954 through the amalgamation of the communities Sakurai ( 桜 井 町 , -machi ) and Ikuji ( 生地 町 , -machi ) of Shimoniikawa County .
