The Kurobe ( Japanese 黒 部 川 , Kurobe-gawa ) is a river in Toyama Prefecture in Japan .

With a length of 85 km, it overcomes an altitude difference of over 2900  m with a relatively small catchment area of 682 km². The course of the river is very curvy with a high flow velocity. It has its source at the Washibadake and flows north of it into the Sea of Japan . The Aimoto Bridge, which was considered one of the most interesting bridges in Japan until it was destroyed, spans the river. It was then reconstructed as a suspension bridge. The river was the namesake for the city of the same name formed in 1954 .

The annual rainfall on the river is 3000 to 4000 mm per year, the highest rainfall rate in all of Japan. As a result, up to 3 billion m³ of water flow under the Aimoto Bridge every year. In earlier times there were very often floods, the last major one in 1969 .

There are 10 power plants on the river that generate a total of 890,700  kW of electricity. One of them is the Kurobe Dam . The Kurobe River is thus an important power generator for Japan. In 1987 , Kansai Electric had a museum built showing the history of the river and the power plants.

etymology

Kurobe means "black part". There are 3 theories about the origin of this name:

  1. The forests at Kurobe are overshadowed by the high mountains in the area. The area around the river is thereby bathed in black.
  2. The name comes from the abundantly growing Japanese trees of life there , called Kurobe in Japanese .
  3. The name comes from the Ainu language , e.g. B. kunnebetsu for "black / dark river" or kurubetsu for "Teufelsberg".
