The Hakusan National Park ( Japanese. 白山国 立 公園 , Hakusan Kokuritsu Kōen ) is a Japanese national park and is located on the island of Honshū about 100 km north of Kyoto . It was founded in 1962 and covers an area of ​​477 square kilometers, spanning the prefectures of Fukui , Gifu , Ishikawa and Toyama . The area was recognized as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1980 .

Landscape and vegetation

The landscape is dominated by mountains with sometimes steep slopes. From November to April there is snow that can be 4-5 m deep in places. The predominant form of vegetation are deciduous forests, which are dominated by curb beech in the upper layers and by Mongolian oaks below . In addition, there are perennial corridors, for example in places where slopes have slipped. Coniferous forests predominate further up. The area is dominated by the Haku-san, a 2702 m high volcano.

Wildlife

The larger animals in the area include the Japanese collar bear , the red-faced macaque , the Honshu sika deer and the Japanese serau . Among the birds, the Nepal crested eagle and the golden eagle stand out.
