The Miyazaki Prefecture ( Jap. 宮崎県 , Miyazaki-ken ) is one of the 47 prefectures in Japan . It is located in the Kyūshū region in the east of the island of Kyūshū. The administrative seat of the prefecture is the chūkakushi ("core city") Miyazaki .

Geography and location

The prefecture extends between 31 degrees 21 minutes 39 seconds and 32 degrees 50 minutes 20 seconds north latitude and 130 degrees 42 minutes 12 seconds and 131 degrees 53 minutes 9 seconds east longitude. After Kagoshima, Miyazaki Prefecture is the second largest in area (18.3%) in the Kyūshū region, but has (before Saga ) the second lowest population (8.5%) and the lowest population density (around 140 inhabitants per square kilometer).

Administrative division

Since March 2010, the prefecture has been divided into nine independent cities ( Shi ) and 14 (district / small) cities ( Chō ) and three villages ( Son ) . The latter are organized in six districts ( Gun ) .

After the introduction of today's community forms, there were exactly 100 communities in 1889, none of which were independent cities. At the end of 2005 there were 44 municipalities, 9 of which were independent cities.

In the table below, the districts ( ) are shown in italics, underneath each (indented) the small towns ( ) and the villages ( ) within them. A dependency between rural district and small town can also be seen in the first three digits of the code (1st column). The independent cities are at the beginning of the table.
