Higashikokubaru in December 2007

Hideo Higashikokubaru ( Japanese 東 国 原 英 夫 , Higashikokubaru Hideo ; born September 16, 1957 in Miyakonojō , Miyazaki Prefecture ) is a Japanese politician and former television entertainer. Most recently, Higashikokubaru sat for the Nippon Ishin no Kai from 2012 to 2013 via the Kinki proportional representation in the Shūgiin , the lower house of the national parliament. From 2007 to 2011 he was governor of Miyazaki, and in 2011 he was a candidate for the gubernatorial election in Tokyo . From his time as a comedian, he is also known as Sonomamma Higashi ( そ の ま ん ま 東 , German about "just Higashi") and Hideo Higashi ( 東 英 夫 , Higashi Hideo ).

Higashikokubaru, a graduate of Senshū University , became known in the 1980s and 1990s primarily with Takeshi Beat ( Takeshi Kitano ), among other things through his participation in Takeshi's Castle with the television audience. From 2000 to 2004 he completed a course of studies at Waseda University , followed by a degree at the Faculty of Economics and Political Science there in 2006 prematurely. In the same year he terminated his contract with the production company KK Office Kitano and thus his film and television career.

In January 2007, he ran in his home prefecture of Miyazaki to succeed Governor Tadahiro Andō , who had been arrested in December 2006 for corruption in the award of public contracts and who had resigned shortly before after a vote of no confidence by the prefectural parliament. Without the official support of political parties, Higashikokubaru received 44.4% of the vote and, with a relatively high turnout of 64% , was able to distance the main opposing candidates, the independent Hidesaburō Kawamura and Tetsuji Mochinaga ( LDP - Kōmeitō -supported).

In the run-up to the 2009 general election , Higashikokubaru considered running for the LDP. After a specific offer of a place on the list in a proportional representation block from the chairman of the LDP election campaign strategy committee Makoto Koga , however, Higashikokubaru made the condition that he could also run as a candidate for the election of the party chairman , who was usually linked to the office of prime minister. The public discussion that took place during the election campaign for the Tokyo Prefectural Parliament damaged the party chairman Prime Minister Taro Aso . Higashikokubaru withdrew his offer and expressed regret. At the same time, he said that after 60 years of almost uninterrupted LDP government, Japan needed a two-party system.

During Higashikokubaru's tenure as governor, the foot and mouth disease (FMD) outbreak occurred in several communities in Miyazaki in April 2010, which also threatened the production of the famous Miyazaki beef. On May 18, 2010, he declared a state of emergency (without legal implications) in the prefecture. By August 2010, when Higashikokubaru declared the foot-and-mouth disease epidemic over, more than 1,200 farms had been affected and over 280,000 animals had been killed .

In autumn 2010, Higashikokubaru announced that he would not run for a second term in the December 2010 elections. His former lieutenant governor Shunji Kōno was elected on December 26, 2010 , who replaced him on January 21, 2011. In March 2011, he announced that he would run against Governor Shintaro Ishihara in the regional elections in Tokyo in April . He is against Ishihara's planned (renewed) application for the Summer Olympics, and he did not take a clear position on the controversial move of the Tsukiji market at the start of the election campaign.

In 2012, Higashikokubaru considered running again in the Tokyo gubernatorial election in December 2012 , which was made necessary by Ishihara’s resignation. He rejected these plans and instead ran for Ishihara's new party in the Shūgiin election. As the only candidate in front of the constituency candidates on list number 1 in Kinki, he was safely elected. In December 2013, Higashikokubaru resigned as a MP and left the party and is again considered a possible candidate for governor.
