geography
Nichinan is north of Kushima and south of Miyazaki on the Pacific Ocean .
history
The city was founded on January 1, 1950 by merging the parishes of Aburatsu, Obi, Gotanda and others. The name of the city is derived as an abbreviation with the Nichi from the old province name Hyūga and nan = south, as it is located in the southernmost part of the province / prefecture.
On 30 March 2009, it merged with Kitago ( 北郷町 , - chō ) and Nango ( 南郷町 , -chō ) from the district Minaminaka-gun to the new city Nichinan. The district was then dissolved.
