Nobeoka ( Japanese 延 岡 市 , - shi ) is a Japanese city in Miyazaki Prefecture on the southern Japanese island of Kyūshū .

geography

Nobeoka is north of Miyazaki and Hyuga , and south of Ōita . In the west of the city is Takachiho , a popular tourist spot , which can be reached from Nobeoka in less than an hour.

Several rivers flow through Nobeoka (including the Gokase-gawa, the Oose-gawa), which contribute to the character of a "water town". In addition, the city is located directly on the Pacific Ocean .

The Nippo Coastal Quasi National Park begins in the east of the city and extends to the Riyal Coast on the Pacific Ocean. The park also includes the coastal area, which is home to the largest expanse of Osuribachi coral in the country. Another part of the quasi-national park is Shimo-Aso Beach, which was named the most beautiful beach on Kyushus Island by the Japanese Ministry of the Environment.

In the west, with the mountains Mukabaki and Okue, begins the huge mountain range of the Sobokatamuki Quasi National Park , which mainly consists of steep mountain slopes and deep valleys. Similar mountain ranges, which have hardly been changed by human hands, can hardly be found in other places today. Due to the rare flora and fauna of the area, the quasi-national park is currently a contender for a place on the UNESCO Eco-Park list.

history

The Agata clan ruled in Nobeoka until the Middle Ages, but they were exterminated in 1578 on the instructions of Ōtomo Sōrin . (During Toyotomi Hideyoshi's campaign against Shimazu in 1587, Takahashi Mototane sealed the Nobeoka clan (formerly Hyuga Agata clan) with 503,000 koku . Agata Castle ( Nobeoka Castle ) was built from 1601 to the autumn of 1603 and the city became a modern castle town divided into districts.)

With the beginning of the Meiji period and the establishment of Miyazaki Prefecture and the establishment of Miyazaki City as the prefecture capital, Nobeoka became the most distant long-established castle town in the prefecture. At that time, former samurai families, such as the Naito or the Kobayashi , had a major influence on the modernization of Nobeoka.

With the opening of a factory for the company Nichitsu (fertilizer) founded by Noguchi Shitagau in Nobeoka in 1923, the city was able to develop into the leading industrial city in the prefecture. In 1933 Nobeoka was officially founded as a city by amalgamating several places. With the establishment of more factories by Nichitsu in the 1930s, the population rose to 91,000 by 1939 and Nobeoka became the largest city in Miyazaki Prefecture.

The industrial reorganization after the end of the Second World War dissolved the Nichitsu Group and the factories in Nobeoka were continued by Asahi Kasei .

With the completion of an expressway that connects Nobeoka with all important cities between Miyazaki and Oita, the beginning of closer cooperation between the cities has been possible in recent years.

climate

The climate in Nobeoka is warm and dry in summer (over 30 ° C) and cool in winter (around freezing point 0 ° C). There can be snowfall in winter , but this is not regular due to the coastal climate.

economy

As an industrial city, Nobeoka has close ties to the neighboring towns of Kadogawa and Hyuga.

As the founding place of the Asahi Kasei Group, which produces synthetic and industrial fibers, Nobeoka is still one of the most important factory locations of the company, which forms the economic center of the workers' city. In addition, many of the remaining companies in Nobeoka City were established in connection with Asahi Kasei.
