Former Hyūga Province (now: Miyazaki Prefecture )

Hyūga ( Japanese 日 向 国 , Hyūga no kuni ), also Nisshū ( 日 州 ) and Kōshū ( 向 州 ), was one of the ancient provinces of Japan on the east coast of the island of Kyūshū . It corresponds to the modern Miyazaki prefecture .

Hyuga bordered the provinces of Bungo , Higo , Ōsumi, and Satsuma .

The old capital ( kokufu ) was in today's Migimatsu district of Saito . During the Sengoku period , the area was often divided into a northern fiefdom around Agata Castle in present-day Nobeoka and a southern fiefdom around Obi Castle near modern Nichinan . The southern fiefdom was held for much of this time by the Shimazu clan of the adjacent Satsuma province.
