Berengar Pfahl (born May 1, 1946 in Mülheim an der Ruhr , † March 24, 2015 in Haan ) was a German producer , director and screenwriter .

Life

Pfahl studied German, philosophy and educational science at Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf. After an internship at the Städtische Bühnen Wuppertal and WDR , he began his film and television career in 1973 with six short films for Die Sendung mit der Maus . In the following years the focus of his work was on films, series and series for television (including the successful multi-part television film Britta ). From 1990 to 1995 he directed and produced the ARD series Sterne des Südens and a little later the award-winning series Tanja . With the television series Offroad.TV (2001) he first included the Internet as a narrative medium on German television. Since 2002 he has dealt intensively with the People's Republic of China , where in 2005 the telenovela "In the Sign of Love" was created.

In connection with the substantive dispute with China, Pfahl made a film based on the novel Shanghai Baby by the Chinese author Zhou Weihui , which was burned in a book in China , but was later translated into 31 languages and appeared in 45 countries.

In 2012 the movie Die Männer der Emden was made , in which Pfahl contributed as an author, director and producer.

Striking in Pfahl's productions were unknown actors in their debut roles, who subsequently became successful. Prime examples for this are Ulrike Kriener , Verena Plangger , Mark Keller and Katharina Wackernagel , whom he discovered for the lead role in the television series Tanja .

Berengar Pfahl supported filmmakers in Sri Lanka and Senegal financially and through personal commitment and was managing partner of Berengar-Pfahl-Film GmbH, which has existed since 1974.

In 1981, Pfahl received honorable recognition at the Adolf Grimme Prize for the series Die Teilänzer (together with Matthias Seelig , Hans-Jürgen Müller and Bernd Rademacher ).
