Shanghai baby

Shanghai Baby (上海 宝贝 ) is a novel by the Chinese author Zhou Wei Hui .

The novel, published in 1999, hit the headlines when it was banned in China because of the excessive depiction of romantic scenes and still is today. After its publication, the novel found many enthusiastic readers, before the Communist Party banned it for "sexual excesses", temporarily closed the publishing house and left existing copies of the book to a public book burning . The book has now been translated into 31 languages ​​and has appeared in 45 countries.

In 2006, the film of the same name was shot in Shanghai and Berlin with actress Bai Ling as the leading actress and Katja Riemann in a supporting role, directed and produced by Berengar Pfahl .
