Bai Ling
Bai Ling ( Chinese 白靈 / 白灵 , Pinyin Bái Líng ; born October 10, 1970 or 1971 or 1966 in Chengdu , Sichuan ) is a Chinese actress .
Life
Along with Gong Li and Zhang Ziyi, Bai Ling is one of the most famous actresses in the People's Republic of China. She performed early on with a children's choir. At the age of 14 she was recruited into the army and came to Tibet with a theater company for three years . After serving in the army, she went to Beijing and also played theater there. She became involved in the 1989 student protests that were bloodily suppressed in Tian'anmen Square . In 1991 she emigrated to the USA and took acting lessons at Lee Strasberg's famous Actors Studio in New York City . After numerous roles in Hollywood , she can now be seen again in Chinese productions.
In addition to her film career, Bai Ling is also known for her sensational and often provocative appearances at major media events. In her role as an official jury member of the Berlinale , she usually appeared in dresses that showed a lot of skin and made them a favorite motif of the press. Since then there have been frequent (and richly illustrated) reports about the “beautiful Chinese woman”.
In June 2005 she was the first woman from the People's Republic of China to appear on the cover of the American men's magazine Playboy . Because her scenes as Senator Bana Breemu were removed from the (then incomplete ) movie Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith , Ling claimed the photos from Playboy were the reason. George Lucas denied this immediately - the scenes had been cut for technical reasons.
Ling also appeared on the US show They Can Act - But Can They Sing? With.
She played the leading role in the movie Shanghai Baby , an adaptation of the book of the same name by the Chinese author Zhou Wei Hui , which was banned in China and was burned . She also made a brief guest appearance in 2007 on the hit American series Lost .
In February 2008, Bai Ling was briefly arrested at Los Angeles International Airport for shoplifting two magazines and a packet of batteries. In March 2008, she pleaded guilty to "disturbing order" and was fined US $ 200 for this. She also participated in season 5 of the reality TV show Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew participated and was escorted during a drug rehab.
