Bingo Province (today: eastern part of Hiroshima Prefecture )

Bingo ( Japanese 備 後 国 , Bingo no kuni ) was one of the historical provinces of Japan on west Honshu and facing the Seto Inland Sea . Today it is the eastern part of Hiroshima Prefecture . Bingo bordered the provinces of Bitchū , Hoki , Izumo , Iwami, and Aki .

The province emerged in the second half of the 7th century by splitting the old province of Kibi ( 吉 備 国 ) into the provinces of Bizen ("Front Kibi"), Bitchū ("Middle Kibi") and Bingo ("Rear Kibi") ). These were collectively referred to as Bishū ( 備 州 , "Kibi province (s)"). The characters of bingo were also read as Kibi no michi no shiri in the early days .

The old provincial capital ( kokufu ) is believed to be in the vicinity of today's city of Fuchū (which is also a name for the capital) near Hiroshima . During the Sengoku period , bingo was part of the Mōri clan's domains.

After the Battle of Sekigahara , Tokugawa Ieyasu gave the province to one of his allies.
