Suō ( Japanese. 周 防 国 , Suō no kuni ) or Bōshū ( 防 州 ) was one of the historical provinces of Japan in what is now the eastern part of Yamaguchi Prefecture . Suo bordered Aki , Iwami, and Nagato provinces .

The old provincial capital ( kokufu ) was in Hōfu , whose name is a contraction of the words Bōshū and Kokufu. Suo was ruled by the Ouchi family, who had their castle in Yamaguchi , for most of the Muromachi period . In the Sengoku period it was conquered by the Mōri family and ruled by them for most of the Edo period .
