Ugo Province
Ugo ( Japanese 羽 後 国 , Ugo no kuni ) was one of the historical provinces of Japan . It extended over the area of today's Akita Prefecture, with the exception of large parts of the cities of Kazuno and Kosaka as well as the Akumi-gun in the prefecture of Yamagata and the part of Sakata north of the Mogami River .
The 1872 census ( Jinshin Koseki ) counted 630,036 inhabitants for Ugo.
history
The province emerged on January 19, 1869 from the division of the province of Dewa ( 出 羽 国 ) into the provinces of Uzen ("front Dewa") and Ugo ("rear Dewa"). These were collectively referred to as Ushū ( 羽 州 , "Dewa Province (s)").
