The Mainichi Shimbun ( Japanese 毎 日 新聞 , literally: "Daily newspaper") is a Japanese daily newspaper .

On February 21, 1872, the Tōkyō Nichi Nichi Shimbun was founded, which was a forerunner of the Mainichi Shimbun . In 1944 it was combined with the Ōsaka Mainichi Shimbun , which had been founded in 1876, to form the national Mainichi Shimbun . The newspaper is headquartered in Tokyo . She is liberal .

The Mainichi Shimbun appears in a morning and an evening edition. The morning edition has a circulation of around four million and the evening edition around two million copies. After Yomiuri Shimbun and Asahi Shimbun, it is the third largest nationally and also the world's third largest daily newspaper. The newspaper employs around 3,200 people and has around 390 offices. The English language version of their website is called The Mainichi Daily News.

Like all major Japanese daily newspapers, the Mainichi Shimbun is also in cooperation with a television station; here it is Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS).

With the Mainichi Eiga Concours , the newspaper has held one of the most important Japanese film awards every year since 1946.
