Shōji Hayashi ( Japanese 林 昌 二 , Hayashi Shōji ; born September 23, 1928 in Tokyo ; died November 30, 2011 ) was a Japanese architect of the Shōwa period .

life and work

Hayashi Shōji graduated from the school in 1945 and graduated from the Department of Architecture of the Faculty of Engineering of Tōkyō Kōgyō Daigaku in 1953 . He then joined the construction company Nikken Sekkei , a company that had developed from a repair department of the large Sumitomo corporation , which had been unbundled after the Pacific War . When Hayashi joined the company, it was of little importance, but thanks to his theories of modern architecture and better business operations, the company grew quickly and was able to take on jobs of all types and sizes. That was the state of development in the 1960s. In 1973 he became director, then deputy head of the company and deputy chairman of the supervisory board.

Hayashi did not pursue any special or emphatically unique ideas in his designs, but rather strived for a "natural architecture" ( 当 た り 前 の 建築 atarimae no kenchiku ), an architecture that is accessible to everyone. On this basis, he designed a number of buildings with very different purposes. These include the Tōyō Shimpō publishing building ( 登 用 新法 ; 1961), the San'ai Dreamcenter (1962), the Palaceside building ( パ レ ス サ イ ド ビ ル デ ィ ン グ ; 1966) for the Mainichi Shinbun newspaper , the Pola building ( ポ 反 田 ラ 五 in 1971) Gotanda, the IBM building ( 日本 IBM 本社 ビ ル ; 1971), the Nakano Sunplaza ( 中 野 サ ン プ ラ ザ ; 1973), the Mitsui Bussan building ( 三井 物産 ビ ル ; 1976), the Shinjuku NS building ( 新宿 NS ビ ル ; 1982 ) and the Bunkyō Civic Center ( 文 京 シ ビ ッ ク セ ン タ ー ; 1991).

Hayashi authored a number of books on architecture:

  • Method of making mistakes when building ( 建築 に 失敗 す る 方法 Kenchiku ni shippai suru hōhō ; 1980)
  • My apartment, essay ( 私 の 住居 ・ 論 Wataskushi no sumai - ron ; 1981)
  • Office renaissance, beyond the intelligent building ( オ フ ィ ス ル ネ サ ン ス イ ン テ リ ジ ェ ン ト ビ ル を 超 え て Ofisurenesansu interijentobiru o koete ; 1996)
  • Design of the 22nd century ( 二 十二 世紀 を 設計 す る Nijuniseki o sekkei suru ; 1994)
  • Gift book of the architect Hayashi Shōji ( 建築 家 林昌 二 毒 本 Kenchikuka Hayashi Shōji dokuhon ; 2004)

Remarks

  1. The San'ai Dreamcenter ( 三 愛 ド リ ー ム セ ン タ ー ) is on the corner of the “Ginza Crossing”. It has the structure of a pagoda : floors around a stable inner frame.
