The Ilmen lock in Hoopte ( City of Winsen (Luhe) ) is located at the mouth of the Ilmenau in the Elbe . It is part of a flood protection concept to that of the tides influenced Unterelbe from the barrage Geesthacht to the mouth of the river into the North Sea, the result of the severe storm surge in February 1962 has been developed.

The Ilmenausperrwerk as the southernmost barrage on the Lower Elbe protects the lowlands of the Ilmenau and Luhe . Construction of the barrage began in 1969. The barrage was temporarily put into operation at the end of 1973, but was not completed until May 1976. The construction costs amounted to the equivalent of around 12 million euros (around 23.8 million DM).

The structure is 33.64 m deep and 47.90 m wide. The passage width is 16 m, the jamb depth in the navigation opening 3 to 4 m below sea ​​level . The flood openings on both sides of the navigation opening are each 10 m wide. The shipping opening can be closed by two mortise gates , the flood openings by two lifting gates each. The barrage is closed in the event of a storm surge from a water level of 3.30 m above sea level in the winter half-year and 2.90 m above sea level in the summer half-year. A fixed road bridge on Elbuferstraße runs above the barrage at a height of 9.50 m above sea level.

The barrage is operated by the Lüneburg site of the Lower Saxony State Agency for Water Management, Coastal Protection and Nature Conservation (NLWKN). The bridge over the barrage belongs to the Harburg district .
