Fernando Ocaranza Carmona
Fernando Ocaranza Carmona (* 1876 in Mexico City ; † 1965 ibid) was a Mexican surgeon and rector of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM).
Life
Ocaranza, son of Ramón Ocaranza and Antonio Carmona, studied at the Instituto Científico y Literario de Toluca until 1900, according to other sources possibly at the Escuela Nacional de Medicina. Clinics where he is reported to have practiced include the Hospital Municipal de Guaymas , the Military Hospital and Hospital de la Cruz Roja (Red Cross Hospital), and the Hospital General (main hospital) of Mexico City. In 1901 he married Loreto Esquer . Their son José Ocaranza Esquer , who also became a doctor, emerged from the marriage . In 1909 he was licensed as a specialist in surgery. He was probably the head of the Instituto de Biología. From 1915 he lectured, was professor of physiology at the Escuela Médico Militar and the Escuela Nacional de Medicina. At the latter he was general secretary from 1921 to 1923 and director from 1924 to 1934. He was also a professor at the Escuela Nacional de Altos Estudios (ENEA). From November 26, 1934 to September 17, 1935 he was rector of the UNAM. In 1945 he became a member of the first university board of directors of UNAM and in 1949 received an honorary doctorate from UNAM.
