Antonio Castro Leal

Antonio Castro Leal (born March 2, 1896 in the state of San Luis Potosí , † January 7, 1981 in Mexico City ) was a Mexican lawyer and literary scholar , diplomat and rector of the Universidad Nacional de México (UNAM), then still Universidad de México .

biography

Castro, who belonged to the generation of 1915 , graduated from the Escuela Nacional Preparatoria and, after completing his studies in law , completed his habilitation at the Escuela Nacional de Jurisprudencia of the UNAM. This was followed by postgraduate studies at Georgetown University in Washington, DC with a Ph. D. degree. He taught at the Escuela Nacional Preparatoria, the Escuela Nacional de Jurisprudencia and the Escuela Nacional de Altos Estudios and was the last rector of the Universidad de México from December 9, 1928, before it achieved its autonomous status, whereupon he was on June 21 1929 resigned this office. In 1934 he inaugurated the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City as director of the Department of Fine Arts in the Distrito Federal de México . From 1949 to 1954 he lived in Paris , where, as a member of the UNESCO Executive Council, he was also UNESCO Ambassador until 1952. After his return from France he lived in the Coyoacán district of Mexico City until his death and was a member of the Mexican Congress from 1958.

Castro wrote numerous books and received an honorary doctorate from UNAM in 1952 . Castro Leal translated Maurice Dobb's Introduction to Economics for Mexico's Fondo de Cultura Económica .
