Salvador Zubirán Anchondo (born December 23, 1898 in Cusihuiriachi / Chihuahua , † June 10, 1998 ) was an important Mexican doctor and nutritionist .

biography

Zubirán, son of José María Zubirán and María Anchondo , graduated from the Escuela Nacional Preparatoria in 1913 . In 1915 he began studying medicine at the Escuela Nacional de Medicina of the Universidad Nacional de México (later UNAM) and became a surgeon in April 1923 . From 1924 to 1925 he studied at Harvard University .

Teaching activities

At the Escuela Nacional de Medicina he taught as a professor from 1925 to 1927 therapeutics , from 1928 to 1933 medical-clinical propaedeutics and from 1934 to 1945 clinical medicine. After the university became the medical faculty of the UNAM, he taught there until 1966 and was emeritus professor of the medical faculty since 1967 .

Public offices

He held several public offices, from 1931 to 1934 he was head of the Department of Food and Beverage in the Health Department, from 1935 to 1937 he was a member of the study commission of the Federal Presidium ( Presidencia de la República ), and in 1937 he was head of the autonomous department for social and child welfare ( Departamento Autónomo de Asistencia Social e Infantil ), in the Ministry of Health (today Secretaría de Salud ) 1938 to 1939 company representative and from 1940 to 1943 Undersecretary for Subsecretario de Social Work. From 1943 he was the foundation spokesman of the Instituto Nacional de Cardiología . In 1946, Zubirán founded the national nutritional institute Instituto Nacional de la Nutrición that bears his name today and of which he was director until 1980. In 1946 he became president of the Academia Nacional de Medicina . From 1946 to 1948 he was rector of UNAM and there from 1958 to 1962 on the university government council. From 1964 to 1980 he was a member of the Main Health Council ( Consejo de Salubridad General ) and was later a consultant emeritus there from 1983 to 1988. From 1970 to 1982 he was spokesman for the national maintenance program of the Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología and from 1983 to 1991 advisor to the Ministry of Health. He was also President of the Sixth Pan-American Congress of Endocrinology , Founder and Honorary President of the Sociedad Mexicana de Nutrición y Endocrinología , President of the Ninth International Nutrition Congress and Honorary President of the Medical Association of the Instituto Nacional de la Nutrición.

Since 1967 he was an honorary member of the Academia Nacional de Medicina , honorary member of the Sociedad Colombiana de Gastroenterología , the Sociedad de Gastroenterología del Uruguay , the Sociedad Peruana de Endocrinología and President of the Sociedad Mexicana de Geografía y Estadística .

Zubirán belonged to various scientific associations, was governor of the Mexican delegation of the American College of Physicians from 1961 to 1967 , was a member of the World Health Organization (WHO) expert committee for the fields of nutrition and diabetes , was a member of the advisory committee for medical research of the Organización Panamericana de la Salud and a member of the Executive Committee of the Population Council . He was also in the Asociación Mexicana de Gastroenterología , in the American Diabetes Association and in the American Gastroenterological Association .

The Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Médicas y Nutrición Salvador Zubirán (INCMNSZ, INNSZ) is named after him.
