José Sarukhán Kermez

José Aristeo Sarukhán Kermez (born July 15, 1940 in Mexico City ) is a Mexican biologist and researcher. Among other things, he was rector of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM).

biography

Sarukhán researched for 32 years, starting at the UNAM Biological Institute, where he was also director from 1979 to 1986. From 1983 to 1985 he was President of the Mexican Academy of Sciences . From 1986 to 1988 he was the UNAM's coordinator for scientific research and from January 2, 1989 to January 6, 1997, he was Rector of UNAM for two terms. From 2000 to 2002 he was appointed Commissioner for Social and Human Development in the national government cabinet.

He has been a member of the Colegio Nacional since 1987 and of the National Academy of Sciences since 1993 . In 1998 he became a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science . In 2008 he was elected an honorary foreign member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

His son Arturo is ambassador to the United States .

Awards

For his scientific work, Sarukhán received several honorary doctorates from national and international universities. Among other things, he was awarded the National Prize for Science and Fine Arts in 1990 in the category Physical Sciences - Mathematics and Natural Sciences. In 2016 the United Nations Environment Program honored him with the Champions of Earth Award . For 2017 he was awarded the Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement .
