Ezequiel Adeodato Chavez Lavista

Ezequiel Adeodato Chávez Lavista (born September 19, 1868 in Aguascalientes , † December 2, 1946 in Mexico City ) was a Mexican lawyer and twice rector of the Universidad Nacional de México (UNM).

biography

Chávez attended school in his hometown, studied after attending the Escuela Nacional Preparatoria (ENP) law at the Escuela Nacional de Jurisprudencia and graduated in 1891. In 1903 he was trained by Justo Sierra Méndez with the preparatory studies for the design of a national university and the editing of the essential Founding statute commissioned. In connection with the establishment of this university from 1903 to 1909, he was commissioned by the Mexican Ministry of Education to conduct a study on the organization of the university education system in the United States . From 1905 to 1911 he was undersecretary in the Ministry of Culture, responsible for public education and the fine arts . In 1910 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the newly founded UNM . On December 1, 1913, his first appointment as rector of the UNM followed. During this time, with the approval of the University Council, he decided to draft a law to prevent the militarization of the teaching staff and the student body at the UNM. In 1914, after the change of government, he submitted his resignation as university rector and was dismissed from this position on September 2, 1914. From 1920 to 1921 he was director of the ENP and from 1923 to 1924 director of the Escuela Nacional de Altos Estudios . In his second term as rector of the UNM from August 28, 1923 to December 8, 1924, he presented the draft of an autonomy ordinance for the university.

After 50 years of academic activity, he was awarded the title of Emeritus Professor and Honorary Director of the ENP in 1941 . Branch office 8 of the ENP is named after him.
