Manuel Gómez Morín (born February 27, 1897 in Batopilas , Chihuahua , † April 19, 1972 in Mexico City ) was a Mexican politician , founder of the Partido Acción Nacional (PAN) and rector of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). He was one of the country's leading monetary politicians.

Gómez, who belonged to the generation of 1915 , was the son of the Spaniard Manuel Gómez Castillo and Concepción Morín de Avellano from Parral . Shortly after his birth, his father died at the age of 24, whereupon his mother sold the house and moved with her son first to Chihuahua and then to León , where he attended the “Colegio del Sagrado Corazón” and then the “María Inmaculada” school visited. After another move to Mexico City, he was able to obtain university entrance qualification at the Escuela Nacional Preparatoria there from 1913 and studied law at the Universidad Autónoma de México at the time when it was not yet autonomous. From 1915 to 1919 he made a living for the family by correcting tests on articles in revolutionary papers. In 1918 he graduated as a lawyer, lectured in law and constitutional law at the Universidad Autónoma de México and worked as undersecretary for finances from 1919 to 1921 at the Secretaría de Hacienda y Crédito Público . In 1924 he married Lidia Torres Fuentes , with whom he gave birth to their children, Juan Manuel, Gabriela, Mauricio and Margarita. From 1925 to 1929 he was a legitimate representative at the Soviet embassy in various legal matters. From October 23, 1933 to October 26, 1934 he was rector of the UNAM and received an honorary doctorate from this in 1934 . Gómez was also a member of the organizing committee of the Banco Nacional de Obras y Servicios Públicos (Banobras), participated in the first study commission for social security and drafted the first Mexican law on agricultural loans in 1926. In 1936 he was involved in creating the legal basis for the controlled Mexican VISA holding company based in Monterrey . In 1939 he founded the PAN with Luis Calderón Vega , which was to become a relevant opposition force in the 1980s and broke the monopoly of the Partido Revolucionario Institucional , and was party chairman there until 1945. In 1945 he became a member of the first university board of the UNAM.
