León de los Aldama , often León for short , is a city in central Mexico and, with around 1.6 million inhabitants in its metropolitan area, is the largest city in the vicinity. It is located about 400 km northwest of Mexico City in the state of Guanajuato . The production of leather is considered the most important branch of industry. Many people who live in the area frequently visit the city to buy clothes, especially shoes.

León is the seat of the Archdiocese of León .

population

The majority of the population of León is made up of mestizos (over 70%), while the proportion of whites is around 15%. In addition, indigenous peoples make up 10%; Asians, mostly Koreans , make up 5% of the total population of León.

• Churches: Catedral Basilica (the cathedral was built from 1765), Templo de Nuestra Señora de los Angeles (built at the end of the 18th century), Templo Expiatorio (started in 1921 and still unfinished), Templo y Jardin San Juan de Dios .
• Museums: Museo de la Ciudad (City Museum), Museo de Arqueologia y Archivo Historico de la Ciudad (Museum of Archeology and Historical City Archives), Museo Panteón Taurino (Bullfighting Museum ), Museo y Centro de Ciencias Explora (the interactive science center accommodates 9500 m² four large halls and a park).
• Other structures: Casa de la Cultura , Presidencia Municipal (1860), Arco Triunfal (built in 1893 on the occasion of the 83rd anniversary of Mexican independence).
• Facilities: Jardin Botanica (Botanical Garden), Parque Zoológico de León (the zoo is home to more than 2000 animals), Parque Metropolitano (more than 260 hectares).
• Public spaces: Plaza de los Martires (the name recalls the struggle between various political groups in 1946).

history

The city was founded by Spanish colonists in 1576 . It is 1804 meters above sea ​​level in a fertile river valley that is used intensively for agriculture. There are gold , silver and copper mines near the town .

Sports

In the Estadio Nou Camp (until 1986 Estadio Guanajuato ) games of the football world championships took place in 1970 and 1986. Among other things, the German team played there in 1970 all their preliminary round matches and the quarter-final against England , which was won 3-2 after extra time.

The city was already represented by the following football clubs in the top Mexican league : Club León ( again first class since 2012/13 ), Unión de Curtidores and Club San Sebastián .
