Chihuahua [ tʃiˈwawa ] is a city in northern Mexico with 809,232 inhabitants (2010) and capital of the state and municipality of the same name .
The name is Nahuatl and roughly means "dry and sandy place".

history
The city, which was founded in 1709 and is also the seat of an archbishopric , experienced a tremendous boom during the reign of the long-term Mexican president Porfirio Díaz and became an important commercial and financial center. During the Mexican Revolution , Chihuahua played an important role as the revolutionary center and base of operations for Pancho Villas División del Norte . Accordingly, there were repeated bitter battles for possession of the city between the Mexican federal troops and the Revolutionary Army of Villas, for example in 1913 and 1916.

- Quinta Gameros (German country house Gameros), Paseo Bolivar # 401: The house, commissioned by the wealthy Gameros family, served as the residence of Venustiano Carranza during the revolution and later as the study of Pancho Villa.
- Museo de la Revolución Mexicana / Casa de Villa (dt. Museum of the Mexican Revolution / House of Villa), Calle 10a / Mendez # 3010: the house commissioned by Pancho Villa was inhabited and by Luz Corral, one of his wives later left to the state with the condition that a museum dedicated to the revolution be set up there.
- Museo de la Lealtad Republicana / Casa Juárez (Eng.Museum of Republican Loyalty / House Juárez), Avenida Juárez # 321: During the time of the French occupation , the then Mexican President Benito Juárez , who had sought refuge in Chihuahua, lived from October 1864 to December 1866 in this house.
- Galería de Armas (German Arms Gallery) and Museo de Hidalgo (German Hidalgo Museum): both the gallery in which weapons from the time of the Revolution are exhibited and the museum built in honor of Miguel Hidalgo are in the building of the state government (Aldama # 901).
- Centro de Patrimonio Cultural Museo Casa Chihuahua (German Cultural Art Center Museum House Chihuahua), Calle Libertad (between Vicente Guerrero and Venustiano Carranza): the former seat of government of the state of Chihuahua has housed a cultural center since November 2007, which includes the Calabozo de Hidalgo (Eng. dungeon of Hidalgo), in which the Mexican folk hero spent the last three months of his life in captivity before he was executed in the morning hours of July 30, 1811.
