Chihuahua is a municipality with around 820,000 inhabitants in the Mexican state of Chihuahua of the same name . The municipality has an area of ​​8393.3 km². The administrative seat and largest place of the municipality is the Chihuahua of the same name , which is also the capital of the state.

The Cumbres de Majalca National Park is located in the municipality .

The municipality of Chihuahua is centrally located in the state of Chihuahua at an altitude between 1200  m and 2800  m . 63% of the municipality belong to the physiographic province of the Sierras y Llanuras del Norte , the rest to the Sierra Madre Occidental . It is 54.5% in the endorheic basin of the Cuencas Cerradas del Norte (Casas Grandes) , 45.5% belong to the hydrographic region Bravo - Conchos and drain into the Gulf of Mexico . The geology of the municipality is determined to 43% by rhyolite tuff with 29% alluvion , 18% conglomerate rock and 5% basalt ; The predominant soil types in the municipality are Leptosol (37%), Phaeozem (18%), Luvisol (12%), Calcisol (7%), Cambisol (6%) and Regosol (5%). 41% of the community area is used as pastureland, 25% is taken up by scrub landscape, 20% is forested, 9% is used for arable farming.

The municipality is surrounded by the municipality of Ahumada , Aldama , Aquiles Serdán , Rosales , Satevó , Santa Isabel , Riva Palacio , Namiquipa and Buenaventura .

In the 2010 census, 819,543 people were counted in 228,638 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 6,615 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 4,265 speakers of the Tarahumara language . About 1.4 percent of the population were illiterate. 351,995 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which a good 60% were men and just under 5% were unemployed. Two percent of the population lived in extreme poverty.
