Ascensión is a municipality with around 24,000 inhabitants in the Mexican state of Chihuahua . The municipality extends over an area of 12,870.8 km². The administrative seat and largest place in the municipality is the Ascensión of the same name .
geography
The municipality of Ascensión is located in the north of the state of Chihuahua at an altitude between 1100 m and 2500 m . It is counted to 99.9% of the physiographic province of the Sierras y Llanuras del Norte and is completely in the hydrological region of Cuencas Cerradas del Norte (Casas Grandes) . The geology of the municipality is determined to over 36% by alluvions with 17% aeolian deposits, 13% conglomerate rock , 12% lacustrian deposits and 10% basalt ; The predominant soil types in the municipality are Calcisol (35%), Leptosol (15%), Regosol (14%), Solonetz (10%), Solonchak (9%) and Arenosol (8%). 66% of the community area is taken up by scrub, 28% is used as pastureland.
The municipality is surrounded by the municipalities Juárez , Ahumada , Buenaventura , Nuevo Casas Grandes and Janos and the US state of New Mexico .

In the 2010 census, 23,975 people were counted in 5928 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 461 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 148 speakers of Tlapanec and 126 speakers of Mixtec . About 5.5% of the population were illiterate. 8797 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which approx. 76% were men and approx. 5.9% were unemployed. A good 20 percent of the population lived in extreme poverty.
