Coyame del Sotol (until 2000 Coyame ) is a municipality with around 1,700 inhabitants in the Mexican state of Chihuahua . The municipality has an area of 11,665 km². The administrative seat and largest place of the municipality is Santiago de Coyame .

The municipality of Coyame del Sotol is located in the northeast of the state of Chihuahua at an altitude between 800 m and 2300 m . The municipality belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Sierras y Llanuras del Norte and 54% is in the endorheic basin of the Cuencas Cerradas del Norte (Casas Grandes) , 44% are in the hydrological region Bravo - Conchos and drain into the Gulf of Mexico , the rest is in the endorheic basin of the Bolsón de Mapimí . The geology of the municipality is 54% determined by alluvions with 20% limestone and 11% conglomerate rock ; The predominant soil types in the municipality are Calcisol (45%), Leptosol (27%) and Regosol (13%). 85% of the community area is taken up by scrub landscape, 14% is used as pasture land.

The municipality borders on the municipality of Ahumada , Guadalupe , Ojinaga and Aldama .

In the 2010 census, 1681 people were counted in 560 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 82 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 76 speakers of the Tarahumara language . 7.7 percent of the population were illiterate. 685 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which a good 83% were men and 5% were unemployed. 7.2 percent of the population lived in extreme poverty.
