Janos is a municipality with about 11,000 inhabitants in the Mexican state of Chihuahua . The municipality has an area of 7420.5 km². The administrative seat and largest place of the municipality is the eponymous Janos .
geography
The municipality of Janos is located in the northwest of the state of Chihuahua at an altitude between 500 m and 2200 m . 72% of it belongs to the physiographic province of the Sierras y Llanuras del Norte , the rest belongs to the Sierra Madre Occidental . 95.5% of the municipality is in the hydrological region of the endorheic basin of the Cuencas Cerradas del Norte (Casas Grandes) , while 4.5% is in the hydrological region of Sonora Sur and drains via the Río Yaqui into the Gulf of California . The geology of the municipality is determined by 45% alluvions with 32% rhyolite tuff , 11% conglomerate rock and 7% basalt ; The predominant soil types in the municipality are Leptosol (34%), Regosol (21%), Calcisol (12%), Vertisol (10%) and Phaeozem (8.5%). About 44% of the municipality is used as pastureland, 26% is forested, 20% is taken up by the undergrowth, 8% is used for arable farming.
The municipality borders the Municipios Ascensión , Nuevo Casas Grandes and Casas Grandes as well as the Mexican state of Sonora and the US state of New Mexico .

In the 2010 census, 10,953 people were counted in 2770 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 807 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 468 speakers of Mixtec and 115 speakers of Nahuatl . Six percent of the population was illiterate. 4,272 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which 80% were men and 2.6% were unemployed. 13 percent of the population lived in extreme poverty.
