Casas Grandes is a municipality with around 10,600 inhabitants in the Mexican state of Chihuahua . The municipality has an area of 3759.2 km². The administrative seat and largest place of the municipality is the Pueblo Mágico Casas Grandes of the same name .
The archaeological sites of Paquimé and Cueva de la Olla are located in the municipality .
geography
The municipality of Casas Grandes is located in the northwest of the state of Chihuahua at an altitude between 1300 m and 2700 m . 64% of the municipality belong to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre Occidental , the rest to the Sierras y Llanuras del Norte . It is 85% in the endorheic basin of the Cuencas Cerradas del Norte (Casas Grandes) , 15% belong to the hydrographic region of Sonora Sur and drain into the Gulf of California . The geology of the municipality is determined by 38% rhyolite tuff with 28% basalt , 16% alluvion and 14% conglomerate rock ; The predominant soil types in the municipality are the Leptosol (54%), Phaeozem (22%), Regosol (8%) and Vertisol (6%). 62% of the community area is forested, 24% is used as pasture land, 6% is used for arable farming, and 5% is taken up by the undergrowth.
The municipality is surrounded by the Municipios Janos , Nuevo Casas Grandes , Galeana , Ignacio Zaragoza and Madera and also borders the state of Sonora .

In the 2010 census, 10,587 people in 3097 residential units were counted in the municipality. Of these, 64 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language . About four percent of the population was illiterate. 3927 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of whom over 77% were men or 4.8% were unemployed. 7.8% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
