Balleza is a municipality with over 17,000 inhabitants in the Mexican state of Chihuahua . The municipality has an area of 5,414.9 km². The administrative seat and largest place in the municipality is Mariano Balleza . Like its main town, the municipality was named after Mariano Balleza, a figure in the Mexican struggle for independence.
geography
The municipality of Balleza is located in the south of the state of Chihuahua at an altitude between 1300 m and 3100 m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre Occidental . 79% of the municipality is in the hydrological region Bravo - Conchos and drains into the Gulf of Mexico , the rest belongs to the hydrological region of Sinaloa and drains over the Río Fuerte into the Gulf of California . 80% of the geology of the municipality is determined by rhyolite tuff with 9% basalt and 8% conglomerate rock ; The predominant soil types in the municipality are the Regosol , Leptosol (32% each), Phaeozem (15%), Luvisol (10%) and Cambisol (7%). 79% of the municipality is forested, 18% are used as pasture land.
The municipality is surrounded by the municipalities of San Francisco del Oro , El Tule , Rosario , Guachochi , Nonoava and Guadalupe y Calvo and also borders the state of Durango .

In the 2010 census, 17,672 people were counted in 4154 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 7,856 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 7,184 speakers of the Tarahumara language . About 27% of the population were illiterate. 5459 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which a good 84% were men and 9.2% were unemployed. 40% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
