Manuel Benavides is a municipality in the Mexican state of Chihuahua . The municipality has an area of ​​5032.2 km²; with 1601 inhabitants, Manuel Benavides is the municipality with the second smallest population in the state. The administrative seat and largest place in the municipality is the eponymous Manuel Benavides .

geography

The municipality Manuel Benavides is located in the extreme east of the state of Chihuahua at an altitude between 600  m and 2400  m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Sierras y Llanuras del Norte . 95% of the community area is in the catchment area of ​​the Río Bravo del Norte and thus drains into the Gulf of Mexico , the rest drains into the endorheic basin of Mapimí . The geology of the municipality is dominated by rhyolite tuff (40%) and alluvion (31%) with 24% sedimentary rock ; The predominant soil types in the municipality are Leptosol (47%) and Calcisol (41%). Almost three quarters of the municipality is taken up by scrub landscape, around 25% are used as pasture land.

The municipality is surrounded by the municipality of Ojinaga and Camargo , the Mexican state of Coahuila and the US state of Texas .

In the 2010 census, 1601 people were counted in 496 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 23 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 22 speakers of the Tarahumara language . About 6.2% of the population were illiterate. 600 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which approx. 86% were men and almost 7% were unemployed. 25.5% of the population lived in extreme poverty.

history

In the 17th century, the region around Manuel Benavides was inhabited by Apache Indians. In 1773 the military prison of San Carlos de Cerro Gordo was founded at what is now the municipality. Manuel Benavides was promoted to Municipio in December 1937.
