Carichí is a municipality with about 8800 inhabitants in the Mexican state of Chihuahua . The municipality has an area of 2594.7 km². The administrative seat and largest place of the municipality is the Carichí of the same name .
geography
The municipality of Carichí is located southwest of the center of the state of Chihuahua at an altitude between 1600 m and 3000 m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre Occidental and is 92.6% in the hydrological region Bravo - Conchos , which drains into the Gulf of Mexico , 5.7% are in the endorheic basin of the Cuencas Cerradas del Norte (Casas Grandes ) , 1.7% belong to the Sonora Sur hydrographic region and drain into the Gulf of California . The geology of the Municipalities is 74% of rhyolithischem Tuff determined at 13% sandstone - conglomerate and 8% basalt ; The dominant soil types in the municipality are Leptosol (38%), Luvisol (28%), Phaeozem (18%) and Regosol (8%). 79% of the community area is forested, 13% is used for arable farming, 8% is used as pasture land.

The 2010 census counted 8,795 people in 2,073 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 4240 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 3979 speakers of the Tarahumara language . A good 39% of the population were illiterate. 3008 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which over 86% were men or 4.75% were unemployed. 33% of the population lived in extreme poverty.
