Guachochi is a municipality with around 50,000 inhabitants in the Mexican state of Chihuahua . The municipality has an area of 6984.1 km². The administrative seat and largest place in the municipality is Guachochi of the same name .
geography
The municipality of Guachochi is located in the southwest of the state of Chihuahua at an altitude between 400 m and 2800 m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre Occidental . 83.9% of the municipality is located in the hydrological region of Sinaloa and thus drains into the Gulf of California , the rest belongs to the Bravo - Conchos region and drains into the Gulf of Mexico . The geology of the municipality is 91% rhyolite tuff with 7% basalt ; The predominant soil types in the municipality are the Regosol (29%), Leptosol (25%), Luvisol (22%) and Phaeozem (11%). A good 85% of the municipality is forested, 8% is used for agriculture, 6% is used for pasture land.
The municipality is surrounded by the municipalities Nonoava , Carichí , Bocoyna , Urique , Guadalupe y Calvo , Balleza , Batopilas and Morelos .

The 2010 census counted 49,689 people in 11,385 residential units in the municipality. Of these, 27,967 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 25,960 speakers of the Tarahumara language . 25 percent of the population were illiterate. 17,753 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which approx. 77% were men or 2.75% were unemployed. 52 percent of the population lived in extreme poverty.
