The Yaqui is a river in northern Mexico in the state of Sonora . It has a length of about 700 km. It rises in the Sierra Madre Occidental and flows into the Gulf of California between Ciudad Obregón and Guaymas . It also represents the original settlement area of the Yaqui tribe of the same name .

Through the construction of dams such as the Plutarco-Elías-Calles Dam, the Lázaro-Cárdenas Dam and the Álvaro-Obregón Dam , the water for their irrigation and canal construction was diverted to the Yaqui tribe. Today they are trying to claim their water and land rights through negotiations.
