At the end of 1842, 15 to 20 independent Indian traders around James P. Beckwourth built a fort of around 55 × 55 m in what is now the city. It was later expanded to include outbuildings. In 1854 the settlement was attacked by Indians and most of the residents were killed. In 1859, the city, which was sometimes referred to as Independence , experienced a tremendous boom in a very short time during the Colorado gold rush . In the 1970s and 80s , Pueblo became one of the largest steel-producing cities in the United States .
