John Robert Moore

John Robert Moore (born July 27, 1890 in Pueblo , Colorado ; died July 18, 1973 ) was an American literary scholar who emerged primarily with work on Daniel Defoe , more than a third of his around 150 articles published in various journals have this Author on the subject.

career

Moore, son of an Episcopalian priest, grew up in Colorado, graduated from the University of Missouri ( AB 1910, AM 1914) and received his doctorate in 1917 at the Harvard University for Ph.D. As a visiting lecturer, he taught English literature at the University of Wisconsin , the University of Delaware , the University of Michigan and the University of Washington , before moving to Indiana University as an assistant professor in 1922 , to which he remained associated until the end of his life; from 1929 he was a full professor here, and in 1961 he retired.

In 1950 Moore succeeded in demonstrating that the General History of the Pirates , which had previously been attributed to a Charles Johnson, came from the pen of Defoe; in addition, he identified Defoe as the author of other anonymous or pseudonymous writings of the early 19th century.
